Vigil for Christchurch | Wednesday, March 20th

People around the world were shocked and saddened to hear of the atrocity that was committed in Christchurch, New Zealand this week. It was an unwelcome and brutal reminder of the evil that is in the world. But we’ve also been reminded of the good that is in the world; by the people in Christchurch and New Zealand that have been offering emotional and logistical support to the victims’ families, the tens of thousands of people who have donated millions of dollars in aid, or the Christian man who stood outside a mosque in Manchester, England, with a sign that read, “You are my friends. I will keep watch while you pray.”

Here at home, the Islamic Center of Vallejo would specifically like to thank the many good people who have called, sent messages, or come to the mosque in person to express their condolences and support; those who have sent and brought flowers; and everyone in the local community who has offered a prayer for the victims, their families, and all the people of Christchurch. We appreciate your support and thank you for your kind words and gestures.

We would also like to thank all of the the local and political leaders who have personally reached out to offer their condolences, support, and assistance, including Vallejo Mayor Bob Sampayan and U.S. Congressman Mike Thompson, as well as members of law enforcement.

Vigil for Christchurch

As a show of solidarity with the people of Christchurch, and to offer people a space to process this unspeakable tragedy, the Islamic Center of Vallejo will be hosting a vigil this Wednesday, March 20th, from 7:30pm to 8:30pm. All members of our local community are welcome to attend.

Attendees will have an opportunity to ask questions, speak their thoughts, and meet members of the local Muslim community. Afterwards, at 9pm, we will have our regular nighttime prayer; you are more than welcome to stay and watch if you would like to do so.

Please spread the word and let your family and friends know about this event. We hope to see you there.

I just left a voicemail for the brothers and sisters of your Islamic community. I am supporting you in prayer; I don’t know if I can make the vigil on Wednesday, but will be praying with you wherever I am. My church is St Paul’s Episcopal Church; I’ve been to your blessed temple at a multi-religion gathering held after the last presidential election. It was hopeful and inclusive. I want to best for all our sons and daughters of Abraham. God’s Peace to you,

    Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As-Salaam-Alaikum. We are unable to attend, but want to express support, condolences, and understanding at this time of mourning. Standing, as neighbors, united against violence and hatred. Blessed be the memories of those who perished in Christchurch. May we as humans be filled with loving kindness. Cordially, Armand Seguin, Cynthia Anast Seguin, George Anast
